Letter to the Editor

TO THE EDITOR:
Many thanks to the Fauquier Times-Democrat and the Fauquier Farm Bureau for sponsoring last week's Candidate's Forum. As was evident by the large turnout, the people of Fauquier County are quite interested in our upcoming elections. Of particular interest to many is the race for a seat on the County School Board. To their credit, I believe that both Brian Gorg and Sally Murray had many ideas to share with the audience regarding their respective views on current issues impacting the quality of education offered to our children in the County's schools. To this late day I am sure many have yet to make up their minds regarding which of these candidates should be given the awesome responsibility associated with this position.

After careful consideration, I have decided to cast my vote for Mr. Brian Gorg. Mr. Gorg's statement that he would bring "diversity" to the School Board in that he actually has children attending the County Schools has really resonated with me over the days since the Forum. While I am sure that other Board members have grown-up children who once attended the schools, this was during a different time. It is not that I believe that ours is a "unique" time in history or that "only current parents" should be on the School Board. However, I do believe that it would certainly make sense that at least one person bring to the Board the irreplaceable experience of what is (or is not) happening today in our schools to the actual children attending the schools. Of course, beyond "just" being a parent, Mr. Gorg also has what seems to be a solid command of various models of contemporary education, their strengths and their potential weaknesses. Beyond this, he has what I believe are very promising ideas for getting our kids away from their computer games and refrigerators and onto the playground. Therefore, I would urge my fellow citizens of Fauquier County to vote for Mr. Brian Gorg for School Board in our upcoming elections.
